The so-called “Western” diet is probably pretty familiar to you. It’s high in animal protein, sugar and generally processed food, and low in things like fruits, vegetables and other sources of fiber. Think toaster pastries for breakfast, a burger and fries for lunch and maybe some fried chicken you picked up on the way home for dinner. It is (to put it bluntly) unhealthy as hell, and has the unique distinction of being caloric enough to make us fat, but nutritionally vacant enough to set us up for a slew of health problems.

Now, the rest of the world has decided they want in on the action.

“We have a whole new group of people who are malnourished because they eat foods that are no good for them, that have no nutritional benefit,” David Tilman, professor of Ecology at the University of Minnesota, told CNN. “The trend contradicts the more traditional causes of malnutrition.”

The reason for this is a rise in income in parts of the world, along with the urbanization. 70% of the world’s population is expected to live in cities by 2050, and living in the city tautologically entails an urban lifestyle. It’s pretty hard to grow vegetables when you’re miles from the nearest plot of arable land, after all.

...Unless broad-sweeping, restrictive laws are enacted (which is unlikely), abating the global crisis will come down to personal choices.
