Father Alejandro Solalinde (Jesús Quintanar/Milenio)
During a recent trip to the United States, Father Alejandro Solalinde was informed by Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents about an organ trafficking network operating in Mexico, whose victims are migrants: "They were showing me astonishing photos. Corpses of young men with open chests or holes in the bodies where the organs were extracted, and then they threw them [bodies] away."
Horrified and outraged at the same time, the priest who runs the Brothers On the Way [Hermanos en el Camino] hostel in Ixtepec, Oaxaca, wanted to know more. In an interview with La Jornada, he said: "All of them were migrants, human beings as spare parts. It is like losing yourself in the void, a black hole where the list of those who are killed will never be known. It is the perfect crime."
Father Solalinde immediately began researching the complexities of this network of [human] organ trafficking made up, he says, of such drug cartels as Los Zetas, who have ventured into this new "business" in collusion with politicians and government officials, particularly in the health sector.
"It's very difficult that the health sector separates itself from the demands and reign of drug trafficking on the border: because if the police [themselves] surrender to the drug trafficking cartels, then all the more reason with a sector as helpless, as vulnerable as the health industry. How can we know which politicians and senior officials are involved in organ trafficking?"
