Members of the Observatory for the Closure of the School of the Americas (SOA, for its acronym in English) blamed the governments of George W. Bush and Barack Obama for the escalation of violence in Mexico via the war on drugs launched by President Felipe Calderon and continued by Enrique Peña Nieto. The activists accused the governments of the U.S. and Mexico of "complicity" in human rights violations committed in our country.
At a press conference in Mexico City, Irene Cambias, Arturo Vizcarra and Theresa Cameranesi, who are on an observation mission in Mexico, pointed out that more than three billion dollars granted to Mexico through the Merida Plan "have been used to deepen and expand the militarization that has caused so much suffering not only for the Mexicans but also for Central American migrants who are also fleeing the U.S.-sponsored violence in their home countries under the banner of the same war on drugs."
Cambias reported that the School of the Americas, the training site for the armies of Latin American dictatorships, has not only trained Mexican military at its facility in Fort Benning, Georgia, but also provides services in Mexico.
According to the activist, the institution, whose name has been changed to the Western Hemisphere Institute for Cooperation in the Security, has trained 16,000 policemen in three years in a "training center in Puebla."
