Deportee Purgatory: Tijuana's 'El Bordo' Is Home to Mexican Deportees (VICE)

Evicting the homeless from the Tijuana River Channel was a good step to address the problem of repatriated Mexicans and drug addicts in the area, but it created negative consequences because they were dispersed all over the city, said the Archbishop of Tijuana, Rafael Romo Muñoz.

"It is is good point, but has other negative consequences, such as those disbursed throughout the city cause problems. But evicting them from that risky area was a good move," he said.

What is lacking is to get in contract with other agencies so there can be integrated attention, he said. That is something that must be done jointly with all the government agencies.

He stressed there is a lack of proposals for productive projects which would allow people to leave that way of life and have an honest way of living.

"For this, it is necessary for all of society to collaborate and to not characterize these people as undesirables. To get them help to the maximum extent possible, perhaps it will not be food, but to see that others with popular appeal will help support them," he said.

He recalled that the recent visit of Fr. José Alejandro Solalinde Guerra, was to establish a bridge so that the Church and civil groups join forces with the authorities and provide dignified care to immigrants and the vulnerable of the Tijuana River Channel.

"One has to look to the future for them, because it awakens a sense of pain when we see them abandoned, with no fixed goals," he concluded.
