It is a priority for the U.S. government to support Mexico in its transition through the new system of justice that is derived from the Criminal Justice System Reform, said U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Anthony Wayne.
He said that for this transition, the U.S. government has allocated $247 million through the Merida Initiative.
The money will support police training and research, technology trials, infrastructure, accreditation and forensic science equipment, as well as training law students, judges, ministries and public defenders and other actors in the new system.
The ambassador said the program works very closely with Mexicans in order to provide the necessary framework for oral proceedings.
While he acknowledged that a transition to a new criminal justice system is not easy, the model of justice that the government will implement offers great benefits. The advantages include greater accountability, transparency and efficiency.
Mexico is an agent of change in transforming a system of fair, accessible and transparent justice, improving trust and the rule of law, he said.
