The recent electoral process shows encouraging results in women’s struggle for political equality. María del Carmen Alanís, Magistrate on the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF), claims that there will be a 5% increase of feminine presence just in the [federal] Chamber of Deputies.
Alanís estimated that the next legislative body in San Lázaro [Chamber of Deputies] will have a composition of 58% men and 42% women. Considering that in 2012 the ratio of elected male members to female members was 63% to 37%, respectively, she emphasizes: “We still have a male majority, but without a doubt we’ve made progress.”
According to her calculations, there will soon be 213 female federal deputies in San Lázaro: 119 elected by majority, and 94 elected under system of proportional representation.
During her appearance in the Senate ... Alanís indicated that according to the preliminary results from last Sunday’s electoral process, the number of women representatives increased in 11 out of 16 states.
