New Witness Account Undermines Mexican Government Narrative of Missing Students (The Huffington Post)
Felipe de la Cruz, spokesman for the parents of the 43 Ayotzinapa students who disappeared last September, called on the federal government to take up again the investigation into the case, since various pieces of evidence indicate that the young people were not in the Iguala Municipal Jail, as the Attorney General's Office asserted at the time.
In a telephone interview, De la Cruz said that yesterday local newspapers published that the President of the Committee for Defense of Human Rights of Guerrero, Ramón Magdaleno Navarrete, confirmed the information reported by Proceso magazine to the effect that "the 43 students from the Ayotzinapa Normal [teacher training] School were never at the facilities of the Iguala Municipal Police."
He, therefore, demanded that the federal government reopen the investigations "and that they extend even to the Army (27th Infantry Battalion in Iguala), as we have repeatedly suggested, chiefly [including investigation] of a captain and a colonel."
De la Cruz recalled that the parents have not been able to file a formal request with the federal government that the case be reopened, including "at the moment, talks with government officials are closed; in recent weeks we have not been approached [by the government]."
De la Cruz stated that "now we are publicly calling on President Enrique Peña Nieto to comply with one of the ten points that he put forward in the case, which is to facilitate the investigation and the tasks that they take to find the disappeared students."
