Astrobotic's lunar rover (Astrobotic Technology)
Mexico could be the first Latin American country to go to the moon with its signing of an agreement with Astrobotic Technology, a United States firm that is offering cargo space aboard a spacecraft to be launched by the end of 2016.
The company’s published price for lunar freight is US $1.2 million per kilogram but how much the Mexican Space Agency (AEM) will buy has not yet been determined. It plans to stage a competition by inviting companies and universities to submit proposals for a scientific research project that would be conducted on the moon’s surface.
The project will have to come in a small package. Astrobotic CEO John Thornton said he expects Mexico’s shipment will be the size of a toaster.
According to Aviation Week, Mexico is trying to find a niche for itself in space to expand its aerospace industry and inspire its science and engineering students.
