Carlos Slim Helú in Mazatlán with President Enrique Peña Nieto  (The Fulano Forum)

Popular conservative columnist Ann Coulter claims in a new book that Mexican telecom tycoon Carlos Slim Helú “bailed out” The New York Times of “imminent collapse” so that he could “buy pro-illegal immigration coverage” in America’s most influential newspaper.

You might ask why Slim, who made his fortune in telecommunications and investments in Latin America, the U.S. and Europe, would be interested in promoting massive “illegal immigration” to the U.S.?

According to Coulter’s simplistic logic, here is why: Slim makes money off illegal immigration by “overcharging” Mexicans to call home and by selling “crappy products” to relatives of Mexican workers in the U.S. who send billions of dollars in remittances to Mexico every year.

“The majority of money sent by immigrants to Mexico is used for ‘consumption’ — i.e. to buy Carlos Slim’s telephone service, shop at Carlos Slim’s department stores, and eat in Carlos Slim’s restaurants,” Coulter says on page 219 of her book “¡Adios, America! The Left’s Plan to Turn Our Country into a Third World Hellhole.”

Coulter reasons that without “30 million illegal aliens” living in the U.S. (there were actually 11.2 million unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. in 2012, of which an estimated 5.9 million were Mexicans), they wouldn’t have much need for phone service, “other than to call in ransom demands.”
