Mexico's chief archaeology agency decried two planned French auctions of pre-Hispanic artifacts, claiming most items were fakes and the rest were Mexico's cultural patrimony.
The Paris-based Christophe Joron-Derem auction house plans a June 10 auction of seven pieces from the Maya and other cultures.
Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History said that six of the pieces are fake. It said a Mayan vase is authentic and belongs to the Mexican nation.
The Paris Binoche et Giquello house plans a June 19 auction of 39 pieces from Mexican pre-Hispanic cultures. Most are ceramic or stone figurines.
The Institute says 24 are "recently made" fakes. It said experts determined 15 are genuine.
Mexico has tried unsuccessfully in the past to stop such sales with allegations of fakery and legal claims.
