Associated Press Update: Hurricane Blanca Weakens Slightly to Category 2 Storm
Hurricane Blanca was strengthening as forecast on Wednesday morning and could be a Category 5 hurricane soon.
The second hurricane of the east Pacific hurricane season as of 10 a.m. CDT Wednesday was located about 420 miles south-southwest of Zihuatanejo, Mexico, and was still in a holding pattern - staying nearly stationary according to the National Hurricane Center.
Blanca had winds of 130 mph - making it a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson wind scale. A storm has to be a Category 3 or stronger to be classified as a major hurricane.
Blanca is expected to move little during the day while gaining strength.
The hurricane center said Wednesday morning that a small or "pinhole" eye has become visible in satellite pictures, and Blanca is forecast to remain over warm water with low wind shear, both of which could help it strengthen further.
Waves from the storm will begin impacting the southwestern coast of Mexico over the next few days, the hurricane center said, and could cause dangerous rip currents.
