Ramírez-Siordia: freed after five years (Somos el Medio)
After spending nearly five years in jail, Óscar Manuel Ramírez Siordia, 27, has been cleared of the 2010 murder of his homosexual partner in a case that raises questions about homophobic prejudice in the justice system.
After reviewing an injunction request filed by Ramírez’ lawyers, the court determined that the case had recurrent inconsistencies, criminalistic irregularities and, most importantly, there wasn’t convincing proof linking Ramírez to the crime, for which he had been sentenced to 27 years.
His first statement after being liberated was hopeful: “I did not lose five years. This experience has ended but my life continues. I want to take some time for myself, but I’m sure that I want to help people who, for whatever reason, find themselves behind bars. There needs to be a change [in the justice system], not only for me, but for people who shouldn’t be incarcerated, or who don’t deserve such harsh, long, convictions.”
