Mexico’s national security commissioner, Monte Alejandro Rubido, bets on his job that no massacre took place at the El Sol ranch in Michoacan state. However, testimonies and analysis of what went on indicate that it was a brutal execution of 42 “innocent civilians,” as 11 of bodies represent signs of torture, local press has reported.

Even more bizarre is the fact that those 11 all come from the same poor “bar-and-brothel” neighborhood, Infonavit 5, in Ocotlan, Jalisco state. Nineteen of the other “slaughtered” victims were also from Ocotlan, working as farmers and construction workers, family members told the Washington Post. They continue to claim their relatives were executed, which feeds into the contradictions and controversies that have already surfaced.

Meanwhile, relatives of other El Sol victims admit their loved ones worked for rising organized crime group the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, but say “they are the good ones.” They were people who protected their neighborhoods: “The people were scared of are police. They rob us, they ask our women to button down their shirts,” a women told local press on the basis of anonymity.

Those who were killed in Tanhuato did not disrespected women, Graciela Piñeda told the Washington Post. “People don't go out in the streets because they are scared of the government,” she added.

The body of one of the El Sol victims, Martin Felipe Garcia Pineda, showed signs of torture, with visible burn spots on his corpse, as well as fractured extremities, his relatives told Joshua Partlow of the Washington Post.

People from Infonavit 5 told the U.S. newspaper that the remains of their relatives were handed over castrated, with missing fingers and missing teeth and, in one case, a missing eye.

“They call themselves the government, but to me, they are murderers with licenses,” Matin's brother, Luis Gerardo Garcia told the Washington Post.
