All in the family: Yunes and son will form a congressional duo  (Cuartoscuro)

Mexican political dynasties are going all out in this year’s mid-term elections, seeking to remain in power as a new generation comes of age. Family ties have never been stronger, meaning voters will find well-known names on the ballots on June 7.

The examples of this practice are countless, repeating themselves throughout the chain of government, from the smallest municipalities to Congress and beyond.

A prominent case is that of Mariana Moguel, daughter of Social Development Secretary Rosario Robles, formerly a substitute to the mayor of Mexico City and now part of President Peña Nieto’s cabinet. Her daughter has been nominated by the Institutional Revolutionary Party for a seat in the Legislative Assembly of the Federal District.

Rafael Ochoa, meanwhile, the right hand of the infamous teachers’ union leader, Elba Esther Gordillo, currently in prison, has been nominated along with his daughter, Zaira Ochoa, by the Citizen’s Movement party for seats in the Chamber of Deputies.
