Stunning 'Sun Halo' Amazes Mexico City (Press Association)

Mexico was going crazy with talk of the "end of the world" and alien invaders on Thursday after a weather phenomenon saw the Sun appear as if it had developed a halo around it.

People in Mexico turned out in their tens of thousands to look up at the optical illusion that created a perfect circle of light around the Sun.

Others hit social media sites to prophesise that the "Sun halo" meant that “the end of the world was nigh” or that the mysterious light formation was a message from alien invaders. But despite these extra-terrestrial and apocalyptic comments, the phenomena is actually extremely common and is caused by the Sun’s light hitting millions of ice crystals suspended in the Earth’s atmosphere.
