Aerospace Industry & Innovation in Mexico (Mexico)

Human capital is the principal driver of the boom in Mexico’s aerospace industry — which over the last five years has reached exports of more than $12 billion — according to secretary of the Mexican Council of Aerospace Education (Comea), Federico Pérez Fuentes.

“The industry has found in Mexico a high quality workforce. Since 2006, Bombardier has worked with engineers trained in Querétaro, exporting to Canada products with zero defects, which is just one example of the level of satisfaction found by the company entering the country,” he said.

At present, about 4,000 people are enrolled into the 26 specialist educational institutions key to the industry, such as design, manufacturing and assembly of aircraft parts.

According to Pérez Fuentes, one of the biggest challenges facing education in this field is staying as close as possible to the industry. Educational facilities must identify the needs of the industry and follow the latest technological developments in order to ensure their curricula are up to date.

General Rodolfo Rodríguez Quezada, president of the organizing committee of the Aerospace Fair 2015, said that growth in the sector meant that in five years, Mexico will need approximately 110,000 employees in this market alone.

“Currently, the industry has 45,000 employees, while the boom and levels of development suggests that in 2020 it will need 110,000 employees. It will be essential to train these extra 65,000 people at the universities within Comea,” he said.

Companies that are already in Mexico and those interested in the domestic industry, he explained, are not only attracted by the geostrategic characteristics of Mexico and its healthy economy, but also by the high-level of human talent they find.
