Authorities in the northern Mexico state of Chihuahua say they are returning about 2,100 German assault rifles to federal authorities.
An official of the Chihuahua government who was not authorized to be quoted by name said the G36 rifles had been used by municipal and state police in the border state.
Germany's government told weapons manufacturer Heckler & Koch GmbH in 2010 to cease all arms deliveries to Mexico amid concerns the guns were ending up in states like Chihuahua, where Berlin has forbidden weapons exports over human rights issues.
