In its third public report, the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI) of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH) denounced the fragmentation of the investigation into the enforced disappearance of 43 Ayotzinapa normal school students and urged an interview with members of the Mexican Army.
At a press conference, members of the group of experts noted that research is fragmented into 13 cases filed in 6 different courts, so they recommended these be unified in order to maintain an overview of the case and to connect the crimes.
Carlos Beristain, a member of the group, said: "The cases are in Matamoros [northeast of Mexico], Jalisco [west] and Iguala [southwest] and the detainees are in other states. We view this with concern and that the investigations be integrated, distances shortened and access to justice facilitated."
In addition, experts called for avoiding the loss of evidence, facilitating access to justice and allowing a meeting with those arrested, their families and their representatives. They also said that other crimes committed during the events, including torture, attempted murder and obstruction of justice, should be investigated.
They said most of the detainees have said they were tortured, which will be investigated by the CIDH group.
As for attention to victims, the GIEI team says that a complete mapping of who these are should be made and that they be given personal attention, as well as that the authorities generate a progressive approach to the victims in order to gain their confidence.
