9News Update: 'White Appreciation Day' Discount Extended to Everyone
On Saturday, the Washington Times reported that Edgar Antillon, a co-owner of Rubbin’ Buttz BBQ in Milliken, Colorado, said the restaurant had to be evacuated Friday after a bomb scare. The reason? Antillon and Miguel Jiminez decided to host a "White Appreciation Day" next month. And it hasn't set too well with quite a few people.
“It’s been phone calls, it’s been emails, it’s been on social media,” Antillon said. “Some are just, ‘Hey, you’re an idiot,’ and others have been legit threats. The former owners of this establishment are receiving threats even though they have nothing to do with this thing. It’s unfortunate.”
Antillon told Denver's 9 News the event was intended to show appreciation for a group of Americans that don't have a day or month of their own. “We have a whole month for Black History Month," he said. "We have a whole month for Hispanic Heritage Month, so we thought the least we could do was offer one day to appreciate white Americans.”
Originally, USA Today said, the event started as a joke. Now it has an official date - June 11. On that day, USA Today added, the restaurant plans to offer a 10 percent discount to all white customers. But that doesn't mean only white people will get a discount.
“It’s like we’ve said many times before, if a black person comes in here and says, ‘Hey, what about my discount,’ they’re going to get a discount,” Antillon said. “If a Mexican comes in here and says, ‘I want a discount,’ they’re going to get a discount. Nobody’s going to be turned down for anything.”
But once again, it seems facts don't matter, only the narrative. Antillon said he has been bombarded with threats over the planned event, even though his explanation is sufficient for the Colorado Civil Rights Division.
