Father Alejandro Solalinde (Jesús Quintanar/Milenio)

Speaking in the United States, the Bishop of the Diocese of Saltillo, Raúl Vera, and the priest Alejandro Solalinde said that for neoliberal capitalism, immigrants are disposable objects for a commercial project in which they no longer have a place.

In a conference they offered at Columbia University in New York about the “humanitarian emergency” created by the way migration is conceived, the priests focused on the fact that contemporary migration, and the way that national authorities have understood and treated it, is determined by neoliberal capitalism’s economic model.

Instead of recognizing their rights, they added, neoliberal capitalism criminalizes them.

“To change the treatment of immigrants means changing the economic model that is characterized by the elimination of people. We are not even talking about exclusion anymore, but directly about elimination. That is what the Pope (Francisco) says, that this is the culture of the discarded,” emphasized the Bishop of  Saltillo.

For his part, Solalinde said that it is important to understand migration as one the numerous elements of a complex system, worldwide and interconnected, dominated by a neoliberal capitalism that creates massive violence against people.
