Growing Mexican Drug Cartel Jalisco New Generation Flexes Muscles in Weekend Violence (wochit News)
A Mexican security official says a drug cartel that unleashed a wave of attacks in the western state of Jalisco used a rocket-propelled grenade to force down a military helicopter.
National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido told the Televisa network Monday that the attack showed the Jalisco New Generation cartel had significant firepower.
Authorities have known that cartels possess such weapons, but this is the first time they have said such a device damaged one of their helicopters.
At least nine people were killed in the attacks on Friday. Banks and gas stations in Jalisco also were burned.
Rubido said that two of three soldiers initially reported as missing from the helicopter have been confirmed as dead, raising to five the number of people killed in that attack.
