The president of the Mexican Red Cross, Fernando Cárdenas Suinaga urged Mexicans to provide help for those affected by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Nepal, which is estimated to have killed nearly 4,000 people and injured hundreds more.
Because of the distance between Nepal and Mexico it is unfeasible to open collection centers, he said at the press conference, so instead requested cash-only donations.
Suinaga Cárdenas stressed that the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, organizations to which the Mexican Red Cross is a member, called upon the country to raise resources to support the people affected by the earthquake in Nepal.
The international humanitarian agency also issued an alert to mobilize 12 regional disaster response teams in South, Southeast and East Asia.
Suinaga Cardenas said that if necessary or required by the International Federation, the Mexican Red Cross could travel to Nepal to help with the rescue. He specified that 350 emergency and rescue management specialists, pre-hospital care and logistics could be sent to provide aid.
Although the quake was also felt in China and India, nations were not severely damaged as Nepal. Search and rescue teams of both nations are currently aiding the Nepalese government.
For donations, account numbers are: 0404040406 for Bancomer and 965 for Banamex. The Mexican Red Cross also collects donations through their official website.
