These days the humble selfie seems to be getting knocked around everywhere you look. Evidence suggests pop culture is turning on the selfie, and its days might be numbered. So, what's next?

If the selfie is to be dethroned, what will take its place? We examine five social media photography trends that could replace the selfie.

Epic Dronie in Veracruz Mexico (Alex Chacon)

• The Dronie - The success of Tourism New Zealand's NZ Dronie campaign shows the dronie is set to take off. Dronies are created when people use remote controlled flying cameras to take photos and videos of themselves. The drones allow for even wider angles than a selfie stick. At the same time, if you think the sticks are narcissistic, just wait until you see someone deploy a flying robo-camera just to grab a self-portrait.

• The Periscope Video - Periscope is a Twitter-owned app lauched in late March. The app allows users to broadcast live video to their followers. So far it seems most people use it to shoot themselves answering questions asked in real-time by strangers around the world. It's easy to see how this could pull users away from the selfie; it's narcissism on a whole new level.

The moment the most famous USIE ever was taken by Ellen DeGeneres at the 86th Academy Awards in Hollywood, featuring Jared Leto, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Channing Tatum, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong'o, Angelina Jolie and Bradley Cooper, as well as Nyong'o's brother Peter. • The Usie -  The usie (pronounced "us-see" not "you-see") is the term for a selfie with multiple people. Popularised by Ellen deGeneres at the Oscars last year, this trend is gaining currency around the world - even Pope Francis was in one recently.

• The Backie - A genuine middle finger to the classic selfie, the back selfie is where you set up your camera and then turn away from it, producing an image of the back of you in whatever location you've chosen. This is a particularly great choice for travellers, because it emphasises the place rather than the person.

• The Leg-Gun - Perhaps the most bizarre of the new trends, the leg-gun was kicked off by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei when he posted a photograph to his Instagram of himself with his leg held like a gun. He says the pose derives from a Communist Chinese ballet and is a gesture about the overuse of power in the fight against terrorism. Thousands of people around the world have since copied the pose.
