In order to create awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Mexico presented a national outreach initiative on the subject called #SíaLaLactancia (say yes to breastfeeding).

At Unicef information centers, subject specialists called for an increase in the number of infants receiving breast milk from the first hour of life up to 2 years in order to strengthen the physical, emotional and intellectual health of infants to children up to 5 years old in the country.

They stressed the importance of promoting breastfeeding because Mexico, along with the Dominican Republic, is in last place in breastfeeding for the first six months of a child’s life. The regional average for Latin America is 37.9 percent, while in Mexico the average is 14.4 percent.

“Every year, about 2.4 million children are born in Mexico, but only one in seven will enjoy the benefits of breast milk,” said Isabel Crowley, UNICEF representative in Mexico.
