The term “witch hunt” dates back to a time when men and women were wrongly accused of witchcraft by biased and ignorant vigilantism, backed by anonymous sayings or reports.

A collective psychosis, fanned by community leaders, pushed enraged mobs to pass summary trial, applying unfair judgement and, in many cases, ending in the execution of the accused, their close relatives included.

Since then, excesses in the alleged persecution of public and everyday life figures are known as a witch hunt.
