A new documentary explores the limbo in which Mexican and Central American migrants find themselves when they try to cross the border from Mexico into the United States and make a new life there, and how they then become the target of abuse, discrimination and exploitation.
After being deported by the U.S. government or having failed in their attempt to enter that country, thousands of men and women remain in “a kind of limbo” where their human rights are continually violated, according to Paulina Sanchez, director of the film “Hotel de Paso,” which premiered last week in the city of Guadalajara in the western state of Jalisco.
“Many deportees have no interest in returning to the cities they came from, even when they’re Mexicans, though that is always an option,” Sanchez told Efe, adding that since 2010 she documented the experiences of at least 300,000 migrants on their way through the border city of Mexicali, in the northwestern state of Baja California.
