Authorities in five Mexican states are on alert after thieves stole potentially deadly radioactive material earlier this week. The iridium-192, which is used for industrial radiography, was inside a container when it was stolen from a truck in Cardenas, a town in southern Tabasco state.

The alert was issued for Tabasco and neighboring states Campeche, Chiapas, Oaxaca and Veracruz, as well as for the federal police, navy and army.

The interior ministry warned the thieves not to remove the material from the container since exposure may cause serious damage to people, including burns, acute radiation sickness and even death.

What happens when a truck full of radioactive material gets robbed in Mexico? Last year, police sealed off a street in Mexico City after the missing material was discovered. (euronews)
