Once again Mexico’s National Electoral Institute (INE) has ordered the country’s Ecological Green Party (PVEM) to suspend the distribution of campaign propaganda and party material.

The party which has been fined more than US$12 million in recent weeks for violating campaign regulations at least 10 times, has been sanctioned for giving away children’s school supplies with the slogan “The Greens do provide”.

It has been reported that the party has solicited a US$10 million credit from Grupo Financiero Interacciones to pay off some of the fines the organization has accumulated. According to a previous decision by the INE, the campaign phrase was deemed to be prohibited, considered to be an illegal strategy to position the party favorably in upcoming summer midterm elections.

This latest sanction comes after the party, a close ally of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), was ordered to stop handing out free tickets to movie theaters, as well as free gift cards to various businesses.

In early April, the party was also fined for handing out free calendars reportedly made with toxic and non-recycled materials.

Last week, an online petition was launched on Change.org calling for the removal of the PVEM’s political party registration. The petition, which has so far accumulated more than 78,000 signatures, accuses the party of using the electoral process for private interests and business.

"The fines are insufficient to punish those who scorn the law and its institutions and it is mockery of democracy and our citizens: it is laughable to punish those who made an entity of a public interest into a profitable business for the benefit of private interests,” says the online petition addressed to the INE.
