Mid-term congressional electoral campaigns began last Monday, as did state governor campaigns in Nuevo León, Sonora, Guerrero, Michoacán and others. Elections for municipal presidents and local congresses are under way in hundreds of locations, too.

This year’s elections mark the debut of several new political parties, but all eyes are on the results that Morena, the National Regeneration Movement, might get.

The party was founded by the “Bird of Storms” Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and a win this year would seal its future as a political force to consider, marking also the resurgence of the Mexican left under a new leadership. The PRD, the Democratic Revolution Party, faces a strenuous fight as they run the risk of looking diminished against Morena.

The latest pre-campaign polls give the PRI, the Institutional Revolutionary Party, close to 34% of possible votes, with its allies, the Green Party and New Alliance, bringing it to almost 40%. The PAN, the National Action Party, follows with 27%. These figures may shift and change between now and election day, June 9.
