National Water Commission, or Conagua, director David Korenfeld resigned on Thursday amid a scandal over his use of an official helicopter to ferry his family from their house to the Mexico City airport.

Korenfeld submitted his resignation to President Enrique Peña Nieto, saying he was stepping down due "to the development of these events" and "taking responsibility for the consequences" of his actions.

The former Conagua chief had already apologized publicly after photos of the March 29 helicopter trip were posted on social networks, vowing to repay the government for the cost of the trip.

The 44-year-old Korenfeld said on April 1 that knee and hip problems forced him to use the helicopter, posting photos on Twitter to prove his point.

Critics, however, were not swayed by his arguments and continued to demand that the government take action.

The Public Administration Secretariat opened an investigation last week of the helicopter use that will continue even though Korenfeld resigned.
