On Monday, Secretary of Government Relations Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong warned that a major disagreement persists over the report presented by Juan Méndez, UN Rapporteur for Torture and Human Rights, regarding torture in our country. In an interview, Secretary Chong remarked: "I made very clear the position of the Secretary of Foreign Relations (José Antonio Meade). Of course, there is a major dispute (in the sense) that we do not agree in any way with his conclusions. Of course, neither do we agree with the comments regarding his work."
The day before, the Secretariat of Foreign Relations released a statement in which it charged that statements by the UN rapporteur are "inconsistent": "The rapporteur, as evidenced in his own document, is inconsistent between what he states publicly, in the media, and what he recounts in his final report."
The statement pointed out that one of the identified discrepancies is the conclusion that the "widespread practice of torture, in a context of impunity involving all law enforcement" exists in Mexico. According to the Secretariat of Foreign Relations, this statement does not match reality.
