Experts in political processes have moderate expectations about the impact that the electoral reform will have in the federal elections that start today.
They believe that public insecurity, disillusionment with the parties and the federal government as well as the disappearance of the 43 teachers in training of Ayotzinapa will have a bigger impact on the elections than the political-electoral redesign of 2015 and 2014, that includes a new electoral authority (the National Electoral Institute), more contending parties, greater oversight and independent candidates.
Jean Françoise Prud'homme, political scientist and academic coordinator of El Colegio de México, believes that the electoral reforms will probably lead to an organizational success, but will not dispel distrust among voters.
"I do not know what to expect in terms of participation. Ten parties will contest and there will be independent candidates, but disillusionment with politicians and parties persists," he explained.
According to Prud'homme "the problem has to do with the political situation of the country and the party system. The population is disappointed with the PRI and the government actions," especially after the events of Ayotzinapa. He added that the fragmentation in the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) and the internal problems at the National Action Party (PAN) will also discourage participation.
