Go Fetch Challenge: Montreal to Mexico By Kayak

There may be plenty of flights from Montreal toward Mexico this May, but three high school friends from Île-Perrot will be opting to take their kayaks instead.

Branded the Go Fetch Challenge, they’ll leave from Montreal’s Old Port on May 16 and make their way to Lake Champlain before taking the Hudson River to New York.

From there, they’ll follow the coast southward, staying within a few kilometres of the shore at most times, kayaking 30 kilometres a day until reaching Yucatan, Mexico.

If the trip sounds like some sort of joke, or an idea cooked up in the wee hours of the night, it’s because that’s how the idea first started.

But over the last two years, friends Julien Granger, Luc Labelle and Nuka De Jocas-McCrae, all 26 years old, have applied themselves to turning it into a reality, one inching closer with each passing day.

“We still have a lot to figure out,” Labelle said, laughing maybe a bit nervously. “But we’ll be ready, there’s no turning back now.”
