No one ever thought that Cuninico, a village in the heart of the Amazon rainforest would ever run out of water. But an oil spill in a nearby pipeline has now contaminated the Maranon river, forcing locals to rely on bottled water supplied from the nearest city.
Oil drilling has been going on in this part of the Amazon for forty years, poisoning four river basins that have been declared environmental emergency zones by the Peruvian government. Now, as Peru plans to lease new oil concessions in the world's largest rainforest, indigenous communities are fighting back.
