Foreign Relations Secretary (SRE) José Antonio Meade denied that Mexico is a “human cemetery” Sunday — a claim made by social organizations during the hearings held by the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights in Washington, D.C.
There are elements that are difficult to deal with and which challenge society, but the government is committed to addressing and correcting those issues, Meade said.
“Mexico is so much more than that. We’re making progress by any and all measures. Violence is abating. We are changing our laws to create the Mexico of peace that we all desire,” he said.
Meade welcomed reports and recommendations, as well as observations that work to “enrich the work of the rapporteurs.”
“The success depends on how demanding the rapporteurs are with Mexico and vice versa. The more we demand from one another, the more impact the work will have,” he said.
The Foreign Relations Secretariat announced that during the 154th session of the human rights commission, Mexican officials offered their full commitment to protect the human rights of everyone living in Mexico. The officials also pointed out that the structural reforms, which have been initiated by President Enrique Peña Nieto’s administration, strengthen the norms of public policy as well as institutional practices. The aim of the reforms is to incorporate international standards for human rights protection into national policies, the secretariat said.
