UCLA Students Provide Free Health Clinic to a Defiant Tijuana Squatter Town

Maclovio Rojas is a squatter village dating to the late 1980s, where poor farmers built non-permitted shanties and the elementary school repurposed a dilapidated Airstream trailer as a lounge. The Mexican government tried to take over Maclovio Rojas after its establishment, but defiant villagers fought back. The government cut off their water and power – residents stole electricity by running wires underground.

Now, every other Saturday, UCLA students trek hours south to set up a free health clinic in this village in eastern Tijuana. They have no medical training and operate without the supervision of the university. That doesn't stop the lines from forming.
