216 Mexican Companies Linked to Organized Crime

According to the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Treasury Department, 216 legitimate companies somehow linked to organized crime have been detected in 16 of the 32 states of Mexico.

Between 2002 and 2014, 17 new Mexican companies joined the list every year on average. Jalisco, Sinaloa and Baja California are the places where more "narcocompanies" were detected; the three states have 163 companies listed by the OFAC.

Until 2014, Sinaloa had one single owner and it was the Sinaloa cartel. Of the 39 companies listed, 35 were accused of being part of the business network this drug cartel, according to the Treasury Department.

In Jalisco, 44 of the 89 companies listed, such as car washes, restaurants, construction and real estate companies, are related to the cartel of Caro Quintero.

And even though the U.S. government has questioned the reputation of these companies, several of them have done business with the Mexican government.
