A program offering bounties to people who surrender weapons has helped take 17,682 firearms off the streets since it was launched in December 2012 in Mexico City, officials said.
The program, an initiative of Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera, is aimed at promoting a culture of peace and preventing accidental shootings in homes since “these devices pose a danger to families,” the Federal District’s government said in a statement.
In Iztacalco, the last Mexico City borough where the “Por tu familia” (For Your Family) program was implemented, a total of 399 firearms have been turned in.
The bounty program for surrendering firearms moves to the borough of Magdalena Contreras on Monday after a two-week run in Iztacalco.
Magdalena Contreras residents will be able to surrender firearms until Friday at the Inmaculada Concepcion Church until Friday.
Officials are offering cash, tablet computers, home appliances and food vouchers in exchange for firearms.
