Looking for a romantic partner? Greece should be on your itinerary. Want to be happy in your romance overseas? Consider living in the Philippines. Is love the most important reason for you to move abroad? Then you might be Dutch.
These are some of the findings in one of the biggest surveys of expats, conducted by InterNations. The network and information site surveyed 14,000 expatriates from more than 165 countries in its most recent Expat Insider survey.
The survey found that 14 percent of all expats leave their home country for love. And more than half of all expats are in a cross-cultural relationship.
On average, about one third of all expats are in a relationship with a local resident, but the survey highlights five countries with exceptionally high percentages: the Philippines (66 percent), Argentina (55 percent), Chile (54 percent), Mexico (54 percent), and Greece (53 percent).
The Philippines also tops the list for countries reporting high satisfaction rates with their relationship: 56 percent, compared to the global average of 43 percent. In Greece, 53 percent reported romantic bliss.
One in ten expats are trailing spouses, who relocated for their partner’s business or educational opportunities. The survey said 86 percent of those spouses are women. And 20 percent of male expats in a relationship have a long-distance relationship with a partner back home.
