Disabled Central American Migrants Demand Greater Protection in Mexico

A group of disabled migrants are crossing Mexico to raise awareness about the plight of tens of thousands Central Americans that make the trip northward every year.

On Monday the group of primarily Honduran migrants, who have suffered the loss of limbs due to accidents riding freight trains – known as the “beast” – in their attempt to arrive to the United States, protested outside of Mexico’s senate.

The group, the Association of Returned Migrants with Disabilities (AMIREDIS) demands an end to Mexico’s so-called Southern Border Security program, which migrants say has forced them to seek alternate routes in the states of Tabasco, Veracruz and Chiapas that are often more dangerous.

According to Mexican authorities, 153 security anti-migration operations were executed in 2014 (see video below).
