Mexico's consumer confidence unexpectedly weakened for a second straight month in February to its lowest level in six months, figures from the statistical office INEGI revealed Friday.
The consumer confidence index dropped to 90.3, which was the lowest score since August last year, when the reading was 89.7. Economists had expected the index to hold steady at January's 91.1 level.
Households' view on their current economic situation deteriorated for a second consecutive month. Their optimism on their personal economic situation in the next 12 months eased slightly.
Consumers' assessment on the present situation of the country's economy compared to the past 12 months weakened again. More significant was the sharp deterioration in their view on the national economic situation in the next 12 months.
Meanwhile, consumers' willingness to make big-ticket purchases improved after a slump in the previous month.
