Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto was given a royal welcome to Britain by the queen on Tuesday as rights groups urged the government to press him on Mexico‘s "out of control" use of torture.
Pena Nieto and his wife, Angelica Rivera, joined Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, Prime Minister David Cameron and other dignitaries to watch a guard of honour at central London‘s Horse Guards Parade.
Cameron‘s spokesman said the prime minister planned to raise human rights issues during talks with Pena Nieto on Wednesday.
The two nations are expected to sign several economic and business agreements during the Mexican president‘s three-day visit to Britain
Activists have pushed for an investigation of Mexico‘s human rights record since the apparent abduction and murder of 43 trainee teachers who were reportedly handed over to gang members by corrupt police in September.
London-based Amnesty International said Mexico‘s use of torture was "out of control," and that torture and other ill-treatment were "frequently used as investigative tools" by the police.
