MEXICO CITY - Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto defended the honor of the country's Armed Forces, saying they were above "any suspicion" amid a series of human rights scandals.
At a ceremony at the Campo Marte military base in Mexico City to mark the Mexican Day of the Army, Pena Nieto praised the Armed Forces in strongest terms.
Amnesty International has said it has documented cases of abductions and disappearances in which Mexican security forces, including the Army, had supported or turned a blind eye to the work of criminal gangs.
Allegations of human rights abuses involving the Army have plagued the government of Pena Nieto, who took office two years ago vowing to restore order in Mexico.
