SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE, Mexico - Graffiti is an eyesore in any neighborhood but in one of Mexico's most beloved colonial cities residents are fighting to protect historic buildings from the modern day problem.
"Our strategy is to remove it as quickly as possible," said Filip Lein, president of "Siempre Hermoso," an anti-graffiti organization in San Miguel de Allende. "Whenever you put up a tag at least in the city center you can be sure within one to two days it will be gone," said Lein.
A two person team of painters removes about 1,000 tags a month and repaints walls in traditional San Miguel colors of gold and burnt red. The city government pays half the cost and concerned residents pay the other half.
