Friday's U.N. committee’s report slammed Mexico for its problem of enforced disappearances, declaring that it is a general phenomena throughout a large part of the country. (teleSUR)

The Mexican government refuted the observations of the UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances, released yesterday, by claiming that they do not adequately reflect information provided by our country on February 2-3 in Geneva, Switzerland, in terms of actions it has undertaken to address the issue. According to a joint statement put out by the Secretariats of Government Relations [SEGOB] and Foreign Affairs [SRE]:

"The recommendations issued by the Committee neither adequately reflect the information presented by Mexico nor do they provide additional elements that reinforce the actions and commitments carried out to address these identified challenges."

On Friday morning, Mexico time, the UN Committee released a statement in which it recommended to our country the creation of a specialized unit for investigating enforced disappearances. In the specific case of the 43 students from the Rural Normal School of Ayotzinapa, it warned that the attack "illustrates the serious challenges confronting the State on the subject of prevention, investigation and punishment of enforced disappearances" and the search for victims.

In response, Mexico issued a statement to acknowledge having received the Committee's final observations and recommendations in response to the report it presented about its implementation and support of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. Mexico's statement, however, also highlighted some of the work already done to combat the problem.
