MEXICO CITY - A former Mexican governor and his family have been linked to about half a dozen luxury properties in the United States, sparking accusations of corruption.
Former governor of the Mexican state of Oaxaca Jose Murat Casab and his family own two condominiums near a Utah ski resort, one at a beach in South Texas and least one in New York City, including a condo at the Time Warner Center which overlooks Central Park, according to an investigation by The New York Times.
The average price per sqare foot for an apartment at Time Warner Center is more than $7,000, according to StreetEasy.com.
In fall 2013, a $750,000 Boca Raton condo purchased in Murat's wife's name was transferred to an entity called IMRO 2013 Trust.
The ownership of the properties was obscured through variations of family names in deeds and through shell corporations - companies that do not conduct active business operations.
