TIJUANA - Marriages where the couple voluntarily decide to not have children, and not for some physical problem, are not recognized and are invalid before the Catholic Church, said the Archbishop of Tijuana, Rafael Romo Muñoz.

The preceding was stated when his opinion was asked about a similar declaration made by Fr. Alonso Gaytán, last January 30, in Saltillo, Coahuila.

Romo Muñoz maintained that the Church respects those marriages where for physical reasons there can be no children, however those couples who do not have children based upon their own decision are not supported by the religion.

"Certainly, one cannot forego having children based on a personal decision, that marriage (when performed in the Church) in invalid, as the objective is procreation," he said.

On another subject, the Archbishop proposed that gay couples should call their union a "domestic partnership," with the goal of differentiate between their marriages and that of "common" couples.

"A marriage, to be authentic in the Church, must always be between a man and a woman. Their courage is respected and appreciated, but gay couples should change the name," reiterated Romo Muñoz.
