The government wants to turn the page. Leave the tragedy and scandal [of the murder of three and disappearance of forty-three Ayotzinapa students in Iguala, Guerrero] in the past and return to its own story. There have been enough tears, critics have vented; time to get back to work. The Attorney General’s Office gives its final version of the Iguala tragedy and concludes the investigation. The final word has been written on the record.
There will be some arrests missing, but the story is clear. The Government has pronounced the “historical truth”. According to the prosecutor. A report based on self-incriminating information is presented as the result of science. Interesting idea of what truth and history are: incontrovertible reality, memories closed down with one story, outlawing of discrepancies. To disbelieve the results of the government investigation would only be the stubbornness of bitterness or perhaps the pretext used by destabilizers to perpetuate their threat.
The President endorsed the policy of conclusion. There is nothing more to say. After the impeccable investigation, it’s time to change the subject and get back to work. The tragedy cannot trap us, he said. We cannot remain stuck in the pain. We don’t have a right to stagnate. The pain must give way, according to the President, to optimism. That’s the leap that summons us: let us patriotically move from mourning to confidence in our destiny. In the presidential rhetoric, Iguala becomes a painful distraction. After the criminal investigation has ended, we must get back on track and trust that everything is right and that, in the long run history will see the students’ deaths as a forgettable anecdote.
