The Department of Justice has built a massive system capable of tracking American drivers using a nationwide system of automated license plate readers and cameras, according to new documents obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union.
Lawyers with the organization obtained files through a Freedom of Information Act request revealing a vast network of sensors that can read a car’s license plate number, determine its direction of travel, record the amount of time it has been traveling and then store the data in a database increasingly accessed by multiple government agencies.
