Mayor Marcelo Ebrard gave Mexico's capital – once infamous for its pollution, lawlessness, and general chaos – renewed appeal thanks to environmental and civic programs. (Alfa Diario)

Marcelo Ebrard, who served as Mexico City's mayor from 2006 to 2012, said he planned to run for a seat in Congress in the midterm elections.

Winning a seat in Congress is important to help lead the "opposition to an administration that is taking us to a national disaster," Ebrard said.

The former mayor, a member of the leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution, or PRD, made his return to public life at a heated special session of the lower house of Congress on funding for Line 12 of the Mexico City Metro.

Ebrard worked during his time in office to get the line built, but the project has been plagued by allegations of irregularities in the awarding of construction contracts and the infrastructure work itself.
